The Hound of the Baskervilles

Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol

April 15th - 18th, 2026

“Audiences really loved the show” (Harriet Vincent, Head of Operations, Tobacco Factory Theatres)

A great team helped us to pull off a top level production on a technically demanding show, with more than 200 lighting and sound cues controlled by Stage Manager Lucy Farrant. Tobacco Factory veteran Joe Price designed the lighting. Award-winning composer Anthony Aldersley composed the music and also created the amazing sound design. Designer Alec Walker produced incredible sets. Costume Designer Abigail Manard created a perfect Edwardian look.

The Story

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary Sherlock Holmes tale, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, is probably one of the best known stories in the world. It first appeared, in serial form, in Strand Magazine, between August 1901 and April 1902.  It’s been loved by readers ever since. Widely regarded as the best of the 4 Holmes novels, it is truly a classic, and has been dramatised for stage and screen several times over the last 125 years.

When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead in the garden of Baskerville Hall, his family estate on Dartmoor, with a look of terror carved on his face, and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside his body, the great detective, Sherlock Holmes, is summoned from Baker Street, with the loyal Dr Watson in tow, to unravel the mystery surrounding his death, and investigate the ancient curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

The Script

The wonderful script we used is by Olivier Award nominees Steven Canny and John Nicholson. First performed by Peepolykus at the Leeds West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2007, it later transferred to the West End. The script is packed with verbal and visual wit that delivers a sublimely engaging and hilarious adaptation of this rip-roaring classic tale.

Over the years, reviews for this fantastic play speak for themselves:

'Delightfully playful characterisation and good tweaks to the original plot... bursts with imagination, intelligence and twinkling irreverence'

Guardian

'A happy blend of madcap humour and surreal comedy with at least one laugh per minute… a superb, extremely amusing, feel-good evening's entertainment'

Our inaugural production was a huge success, selling 700 tickets in a very short 4 day run - a real achievement for the first show of a new theatre company. The Tobacco Factory is a fantastic and well-established venue in a densely populated part of the city – and we definitely benefitted from word of mouth, selling lots of tickets after our first couple of nights. The viewer response was incredibly positive.
